Washing a Scouring Pad in the Dishwasher

My husband likes to use a green scouring pad when he does the dishes. I am not the biggest fan of scouring pads because keeping them clean is troublesome. I don’t feel like I can get them completely clean when I hand wash them and when I put them in the washing machine they become soft and ineffective. And you know that tossing them and buying new ones is just not my style…

Sarah at Frontier Kitchen had a post on washing sponges in the dishwasher and because I  want to encourage my husband to keep helping with the dishes am a loving wife, I decided to try Sarah’s idea on our scouring pads:

It worked like a charm. The scouring pad came out clean and maintained the abrasive quality that my husband likes.

I use the sponge that is yellow on one side and green/scouring pad on the other. I don't like to put it in the dishwasher because the dishwasher detergent chemicals are harsh and residue can be left in the sponge. So, about once a week, I get the sponge very wet, add dish detergent and put in the the microwave for 30 seconds. I leave it in there for about 5 to 10 minutes, until I can handle the sponge, then I wipe down the microwave (it'll be steamy) and it gets crud off easily plus cleans my sponge. So, we're all happy! 😉

I've seen commercials for this and wondered if it would work on any sponge/scouring pad. Great idea!

Oh, be careful doing that! I use plastic mesh pads to scrub dishes, and I used to wash it in the dishwasher. It was fine for a while … months! But when we had a dishwasher problem, my husband took out the filter and found all these little pieces of blue plastic … from the mesh pad.

Your scouring pad is different from mine, but I wanted to let you know!

I just recently discovered stainless steel scouring pads, and love them. And I clean them the same way. I know someone who disinfected a cat carrier in their dishwasher, but that's taking it a little too far for my taste 🙂

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
