What to Buy in December

Holiday food items: This would include all of the fixings for your holiday dinner. Check the end caps and center aisle for the best prices on boxed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, pies, breads, turkey, hams, and even specialty drinks like cider and eggnog.

Baking items: Baking items will still be at their lowest in December. Now is the last chance to stock up at a great price. Sale items will include flour, sugar, brown sugar, cake and brownie mixes, pie ingredients, canned pie filling, muffin mix, bread mix, frosting, marshmallows, pudding, and whipped topping. Here are additional tips for saving money on baking supplies.

Canned foods: Donate to local charities and fill your own pantry when you take advantage of all of the canned food sales. Canned foods last a long time, so don’t worry about buying a ton! Canned foods you will see on sale include: cream soups, broth, canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned meat products, canned sauces, and condensed milk.

Thanksgiving clearance: Don’t rule out Thanksgiving items just yet. You can still buy paper items, table settings, and carving sets that you can use all year, and for as much as 75% off. So stock up and enjoy!

Winter produce: In season produce will vary from state to state. Country wide though you will see sale prices on oranges, fruit baskets in general, and other citrus fruits as well. You will also find winter squash varieties as well as turnips. Here are more tips for  how to save money on produce in winter.

Televisions: Sales on televisions will continue throughout the month of December. You will find lots of hot steals on little known brands. Just do research before you buy to make sure it is a reputable brand and worth the deal.

Summer sporting goods: Like to golf? Like to swim? Now is the time to buy gear for your outdoor sports and recreation. You will find great deals on pools and spas, golf clubs, golf shoes, and other gold gear, as well as a variety of outdoor sports items. Buy now and save, and enjoy these items when the warmer months arrive.

Gift sets: Find great deals on gift sets intended for gift giving. While these do make great gifts, they are also nice to have for yourself if they contain items you need and use. Examples would be toiletry sets, shaving sets, cooking utensil sets, spice sets, and perfume sets.

Generic children’s toys: Find off brand toys for less this month. Examples include dolls, tool sets, kitchen sets, board games, and more. Buy to give as gifts during the holidays and set some back for birthdays and other events.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
