5 Ways to Encourage Art Appreciation in Children - try out these tips for encouraging art appreciation in children to foster a love of art at a young age.

Teaching your children about art is wonderful way to stretch their imaginations and encourage their own creativity. You may be wondering as a parent what the best way is to encourage such an appreciation for art. It is easier than you may think, and even a parent who isn’t necessarily artistic or very knowledgeable about art themselves can do it. Take a look below at 5 ways to encourage art appreciation in children in your own home.

5 Ways to Encourage Art Appreciation in Children

1. Visit a local gallery.
Take a trip to a local art gallery in your town. Before you go, review what typical museum/gallery etiquette is. This would include using a soft voice, not touching unless it is deemed ok by the museum staff, and no running. Have a tour guide show you some of the most popular pieces and share a little bit about the artists with you as well.

2. Recreate your favorites.
One piece of art is sure to stand out to your child more than others. When you get home, recreate that piece. This can be through a drawing, play dough sculpture, side walk chalk sketch, or any other medium you decide. This is a great way for them to try their hands at art and mimic the artist they admire.

3. Take an online tour.
If you can’t get out to a local museum, view some online galleries. There are many online galleries that you can view and see some classic and contemporary art pieces. This is also a great way to view pieces that are miles and miles away, perhaps in other countries or no longer on display.

4. Talk about the feelings art evokes.
Many people enjoy viewing art because it makes them feel a certain way. Take a look at various paintings and sculptures and see how the pieces make them feel. Are they happy? Sad? Angry? Dreamy? Silly? Show them various examples that reflect these feelings. Let them know that creating art can help channel their own feelings as well as bring out the feelings in others!

5. Let them purchase their own piece.
Owning a piece of art is wonderful feeling. Take your child to a local street fair or craft show where they can purchase their own piece of art. You can find inexpensive prints, jewelry pieces, or paintings for under $20. Allowing them to begin their own collection is a great way to encourage their appreciation.

When you give these tips a try, you can encourage an appreciation for art in your own children easily and effectively!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
