This Baked Rice Recipe makes a great casserole base. You can even prepare it ahead of time and freeze it for fried rice and other side dishes.

This Baked Rice Recipe makes a great base in casseroles. It is also an easy side dish to prepare and freeze for meals later.

Rice is one of my all-star side dishes. It can be flavored in a variety of ways and tastes amazing cooked in a skillet or steamed and even boiled, but have you ever had it baked in the oven? You can simply bake rice in the oven by combining rice and water. However, baking rice in the oven also allows it to develop some unique flavors if you replace the water with broth and add some herbs or spices. Since rice is so easy to customize, you can add in any herbs and spices you want to create a side dish to compliment your meal.

This Baked Rice Recipe uses some of my favorite spices and chicken broth, but you could use any type of broth to change up the flavor.

This also works well for meal planning and batch cooking and as a base for many casseroles. I also recommend using this for fried rice. Simply make it ahead of time and when it’s time to get it together, toss it in a skillet for a few minutes to fry it with your favorite fried rice seasoning and ingredients. You won’t make fried rice with plain rice again!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
