Actually this is less of a baking tip and more of a cutting tip.
To create a level layer cake, use a bread knife to cut the rounded top off and using the cake pan as the guide:
I saw the knife in a bit, then slowly spin the pan while cutting. (Feed the top to the hungry teenager drooling nearby). Then turn the cake onto a plate with the cut side down:
Frost, then repeat with the second layer.
