Once again I am joining in Food Waste Friday at The Frugal Girl; displaying my weekly food waste. I do not do this to embarrass my kids, though that is definitely a benefit, but to keep me aware of and accountable for our food waste. Reflecting on my waste, helps me learn from my mistakes, so that I do not mindlessly keep repeating them.
The grapes are an example of why it is best to eat “in season” fruits and vegetables. I had been buying organic grapes each week for $2.00 a pound. They were sweet and crisp and we all enjoyed them! Then they just disappeared. I couldn’t find organic grapes any where for any price. On a trip to the corner grocery store, I broke down and bought over priced, non-organically grown grapes. They weren’t that good, but we still ate most of them on the day I brought them home. Which is a good thing, because they were limp the next day, and the day after that they started to get wrinkly. I have learned my lesson and will wait for my sweet organic grapes to return.
The spinach was pushed to the back of the refrigerator, behind leftovers from a dinner party. By the time we ate our way to the spinach, some of the leaves were slimy.
