Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix Recipe
Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix in a Reindeer Jar

Let the kids mix up a batch of this delicious hot chocolate mix to give out as gifts!

Homemade hot chocolate mix recipe that is easy enough that kids can make it for their friends.

This Hot Chocolate Mix Recipe is as wonderful to give as a gift, as it is to drink. Sweet, creamy,  and chocolate-y it is so much better than the store-bought packets. When kids are able to make homemade Christmas gifts they get a taste of the joy of creating something special for someone special and gifts of food are especially wonderful to receive.

Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 tablespoons powdered milk
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla or peppermint extract
  • Pinch of salt

You will also need a half-pint jar, I picked up mine at Hobby Lobby for $1.

Directions:

Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and whisk well, the more you mix the better the end result will end up.

Spoon into the jar or have your child carefully spoon the mixture into the jar.

Replace the lid and wipe off the outside.

You can add a pretty ribbon to gift or give it the full treatment by turning the jar into Rudolph with his nose so bright (directions for a Rudolph Hot Cocoa Jar below). Don’t forget to include another jar full of marshmallows to top off their homemade cocoa! Be sure to include directions for how to prepare the hot chocolate mix.

To serve: combine 2 tablespoon cocoa mix with 8 ounces of boiling water.

Diy cocoa mix reindeer jar - a fun gift for kids to make this Christmas.

How to Make a Rudolph Hot Cocoa Jar

Items Needed:

  • A red pompom
  • Googly eyes
  • 2 brown pipe cleaners

Directions:

Hot glue googly eyes and the red pop pom in place.

Wrap one pipe cleaner around the jar just below the lid and twist the ends, turn to the back. Cut the second brown pipe cleaner in half and twist one around one end of the pipe cleaner secured to the jar to create antlers. Repeat with the other half.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
