The Dollar Tree seems to be a new wonder every time I enter it. My family is always in awe of what one can purchase in that store. I know several people who actually complete their weekly grocery shopping trip at Dollar Tree. Of course, it’s not the only place they shop, but they do get a lot of their items there. If you like to save money on groceries by shopping there as well, here are some tips on How to Eat Healthy at Dollar Tree.
How to Eat Healthy at Dollar Tree
Read the ingredients. Do yourself a favor and make sure you read the ingredients of what you are buying at Dollar Tree. While there are some healthy options available, there are so many not-so-healthy options. You can easily determine what is healthy and what is not when you read the ingredients.
Start with protein. Anyone who eats a sensible diet knows that protein is important. The good thing about the Dollar Store is that you have plenty of protein options available. Start with the basics like beans and rice. You can also find canned meats, pepperoni, and Vienna sausages. You may get lucky and find things like bacon or sausage in the refrigerated part of Dollar Tree as well. You can even stock up on their beef and jerky sticks. They are another great source of protein.
Look for the nuts. Another healthy item that you can easily find at Dollar Tree are nuts. There are many different types of nuts for sale there. You can get almonds, mixed nuts, hot and spicy peanuts, crunchy peanuts, and so much more. Nuts are great for those who are trying to lead a healthy lifestyle and they make a delicious treat. Let’s not forget that you can also purchase peanut butter at Dollar Tree, which is also a great staple for someone who is trying to eat healthier.
Check out the trail mix. One of my favorite things to grab at Dollar Tree in honor of eating healthy are the trail mix options. You can grab things like banana chips, raisins, trail mix, dried cranberries, and dried apples. You can even get trail mix—mixed with chocolate. YUM!
Look for healthier snack options like popcorn and nutrition bars. Most Dollar Trees sell items like granola bars or cereal bars. While these aren’t necessarily top of the line healthy, if you can get ones that have a lower sugar count, you are doing great. When your “healthy” options are limited, these kind of things will work in a pinch. Popcorn is always a great healthy snack because it’s low in calories and carbs.
Eating healthy at Dollar Tree is all about choosing the right items. Yes, you may be spending some extra time in the store reading the ingredients and shopping around, but you cannot beat $1 for each item in the store.
