How I Find Sales on Meat

I have scored great deals on ground turkey several times this year. The last one was the best. I saved an additional $3.00 per package on extra lean ground turkey and it was  already on sale for $3.99. So I paid $0.99 for 1 1/4 for extra lean ground turkey. Yeah, I was jazzed and I was a one-way and bought all four packages at that price.

I’m sharing how I used my great ground turkey deal in White Chili with Ground Turkey at $5 dinners this evening.

With prices on food continuing to climb it is important for me to find sales to stretch our food budget a little farther. How do I find great deals on meat, which can be quite expensive?

First, I use a price book. Today, when I was at my local Wal-Mart, I noticed that their everyday price was $0.50 – $1.50 less than my local grocery stores on most of there packages of ground turkey, but one was $0.98 more. Using a pricebook to keep track of the best prices across several stores allows me to save money, even when I do not have a coupon.

Second, I always look at my local stores’ weekly sale prices. When there is a really good sale, I stock up items that we use.

Finally, I always check out the manager’s markdowns. Buying meat from the markdown section means I either need to cook it immediately or freeze it right away. I usually opt for freezing it and then work it into my rotation when it is convenient.

And sometimes I am lucky and can combine a couple of my techniques for a major score!

I am always looking for a bargain, because if you don’t look for deals, you won’t find them!

    No matter what I go to the store for, I always check the manager’s markdowns in produce, meat, breads and dairy. I only buy select items in each area, so it takes only a few seconds to check. Most days there is something I can use and sometimes there is a great deal so I buy as much as I can. Thankfully, I have a large freezer to accommodate extra purchases like that.

Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
