Have you tried your hardest to get birds to flock to your yard, but can’t seem to make it happen? If you are frustrated that despite your efforts birds aren’t paying you a visit, there could be a simple solution. Take a peek below at 7 Reasons Birds May Be Avoiding Your Yard, so you can make the correct changes that will get them flocking again! It is easier than you may think, and some are minor changes that make a huge difference. Here is how to get started.
7 Reasons Birds May Be Avoiding Your Yard
1. Insufficient/Dirty Water
Check your water supply. Birds love fresh water, so think about having a water feature such as a pond, bird bath, or sprinkler. If you already have one of these features and it isn’t working, try giving the receptacle a good cleaning. Something to add movement to the water may help also, such as a bubbler or floating object.
2. Feeders that are more decorative than purposeful.
Use feasible feeders. Some bird feeders are more decorative than they are purposeful. Look at your bird feeders and make sure there is sufficient room for the bird to rest while eating, that the hole is large enough to feed from, that the feeder is stable enough to rest on, and that nothing is blocking the feeder.
3. Placing feeders in areas where critters frequent.
Don’t place feeders in critter frequented areas. If you have a cat that likes to be outside or a dog that is outdoors for lengthy periods of time, birds may not feel comfortable visiting. Only put feeders where birds can eat in peace and not feel a threat. For some, the perfect place is on the side of the house or a front yard where animals don’t go.
4. Lack of home building supplies.
Place some home building supplies out. Encourage the birds to not only visit to eat, but to stay awhile! Place bundles of yarn, string, and fabric strips outside so the birds can pick from it and build their nests. They are sure to appreciate it. When they do build their nests nearby, you will be sure to see them more.
5. Neglected/dirty feeders.
Keep feeders clean. Just like you don’t want to eat from a dirty plate, birds don’t want to eat from a dirty feeder. A dirty feeder can in fact make them sick, so keep yours clean. It is a good idea once a month to empty the feeder, wash with hot soap and water, and refill with fresh food. This will keep the birds coming back for more.
6. Lack of ground cover.
Provide ground cover. Birds like a safe and shady space where they can rest and relax. Provide low shrubs and thick ground cover for the birds to hang out and hide out in. If they know there is that refuge in your yard, they will be more apt to visit it.
7. Lack of other food sources.
Birds like variety. Although you are placing seed out, why not try some other food sources? Plant flowering or fruit trees and try placing grape jelly out for orioles. They will like this variety and it will help attract more types of birds.
If you aren’t seeing birds in your yards, any of these reasons could be the culprit. Give them your consideration and make the necessary changes so you can start seeing more birds in no time.
