How to Make Suet Cupcakes - These DIY suet cupcakes, made with leftover grease, cupcakes cups, and birdseed are a fun and frugal way to attract birds to your yard.

Attracting birds to your yard can be fun and entertaining. Having the right food out for them to dine on is key when attracting birds, especially if you are trying to attract them during the cold winter months. These DIY suet cupcakes are perfect treats for the birds that come to dine in your yard, and can be made from some simple kitchen scraps and a little birdseed. Here is how you can get busy crafting your own. The birds are sure to love them!

How to Make Suet Cupcakes

Supplies needed:

  • 1 cup of bacon (or other) grease
  • 2 cups of  birdseed
  • Cupcake cups
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon

DIY Suet Cupcakes - Supplies needed

We just saved our bacon grease directly from the pan. After cooking, allow the grease to cool and then scrap off with a spatula. Store the grease in a glass jar until you have enough. If you have less than one cup but want to go ahead and make these, just cut back on seed. For example if you have 1/2 a cup of grease, add 1 cup of birdseed instead.

Directions:

1. In a mixing bowl, spoon in the grease and allow it to soften. Just having it sit at room temperature for a few minutes will help it do this.

2. Add in the birdseed. You can use any birdseed you wish. Choose wild bird variety that is full of the seeds that not only attract the birds but offer them healthy fats and oils to stay warm and full.

3. Stir the mixture well and spoon into the cupcake cups.

4. Place the cups in a freezer to help them solidify. 2 hours is about all it takes.

To use your DIY suet cupcakes, you can simply place the entire cup out on the feeder. Or, you can remove the paper and place the suet block in a feeder of your choosing or hang it by string. Birds will love the tasty seeds and the grease will help fatten them up as well.

Make friends with the birds that come to your yard. Give these DIY suet cupcakes a try and see how fun and easy it can be!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
