The crocus is a hardy and beautiful flower that are one of the favorite blooms for many gardeners. With this flower garden staple being full of color and simple for most to grow, it is a popular choice for even novice gardeners. These Tips for Growing Crocus Plants are a great place to begin when building your next flower garden.

Tips for Growing Crocus Plants

Buy your bulbs early on in the season but don’t plant them until your soil is below 60 degrees.  Temperatures will drop at different times depending on where you live.  Commonly, you will plant these in October or November. To plant at the best time, base it upon the local predictions for the first freeze. Your bulbs should be in the ground before it freezes.

When planting, choose a location with partial to full sunlight.  This flower garden must have, loves the sunlight and thrives in those conditions.

Plant your crocus bulbs in areas that have good drainage. Crocus plants do not do well in excessively wet conditions.  Many gardeners use a common flower garden tip of adding sand to your soil to help with drainage.

Avoid planting crocus bulbs in clay or other non-porous soils.

Crocus proliferate quickly, so make sure you keep them in a set area and have plenty of room for growth.   They made do well indoors, or even in a container garden for this reason. Check out our tips for creating a container garden as another option.

Plant the bulbs in groups and make sure they are at least three inches apart and three inches deep.

If burrowing animals or deer are a concern with digging up bulbs, take a look at our tips for keeping deer out of the garden.  While these tips are more for vegetable gardens, they do work well for your flower garden.

If your winters are harsh, be sure to put mulch or hay over the planted areas until the season of flowering.

You should divide the crocus bulbs every three years or so and replant. This will ensure that they are properly cultivated and spread out. You need at least four stems to ensure a good plant when dividing. Make sure you wait until the off season when the plants are dormant before dividing.

Most gardeners will also fertilize during the fall and very rarely water the bulbs. The only time you really want to water the plants is when they are in a serious drought condition.

A flower garden is one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of nature around you. These helpful tips for growing crocus bulbs will make it easier for you to create that beautiful garden you want.  Put these tips into place to make your flower garden a gorgeous addition to your property and home!
