7 Tips for Organizing Clothing Clutter- Is your closet bursting at the seams? Check out these efficient ways to organize and declutter your clothes.

Looking at your closet, it may scare you to try and find something to wear every morning. How in the world did so much clothing clutter accumulate?! Don’t worry, because it’s easy to tackle this clutter without feeling too overwhelmed. You can break it up into several sessions or set aside a full day for the job and you’ll have less clothing cluttering your closet by the time you are done with these Tips for Organizing Clothing Clutter.

7 Tips for Organizing Clothing Clutter

First, do not pull everything out of your closet! It will make an overwhelming mess. The only thing you will remove are the items that you are going to donate. By not removing everything, you can break it up over several decluttering sessions. If you choose to break it up into several session, you may want to declutter by clothing type: dresses, pants, blouses, sweaters, jackets, accessories, etc.

Access every article of clothing in your closet.

Go ahead; touch every piece, every hanger. Or just touch every piece of the category of clothing you are going through in this session. Think about why you bought it, when you’ve worn it, how long it has been since you’ve worn it, and if you will realistically wear it again. Slide the “must keep” items to one side, while pulling out any pieces you no longer want or need.

Try on garments you aren’t sure of.

If you think you want to keep an item, but you haven’t worn it in a while, try it on. Just because it’s still looking good on the hanger doesn’t mean you still like how it looks on you. Stand in the front of the mirror while wearing questionable garments and make the decision to keep or toss.

Donate anything you haven’t worn in a year.

Unless it’s a new treasure you just rediscovered in your closet, it’s likely that you won’t wear it again. Part with items that have been doing nothing but taking up space for an extended period of time.

Organize your clothing by type.

Once you have categorized your clothing by shirts, pants, and dresses, you can really see how much you still have. If you have 20 dresses, and you typically only wear a dress three times a year, it may be okay to part with a few more. The same goes for those 4 black, short-sleeve tops you have. Continue to whittle it down!

Store off-season clothing to clear your closet.

If your closet feels cluttered simply because you don’t have space, place some of your clothing not being worn right now in storage totes. These are safe in the attic or garage. Just be sure to go through this clothing when you pull it out for the season in a few months and declutter items you don’t want or need. You don’t want to reintroduce clothes you won’t be wearing!

Don’t forget to organize the shoes.

The closet floor needs some decluttering every now and again too. The same rules apply as with clothing. Sort shoes by type, get rid of any you haven’t worn in a year, and store off-season shoes to free up some room.

Declutter throughout the year.

Making a commitment to doing a quick declutter once a month. This will help you keep your closet orderly and clutter-free. Just because you aren’t ready to part with that gold top now, doesn’t mean you won’t be ready to get rid of it in a couple months. This task shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes of your month, and will help you keep your closet less cluttered in the long run.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
