Extend the life of your vehicle with proper maintenance. These Car Maintenance Tips to Give Your Car a Long Life will tell you what to keep an eye on.

When someone buys a car, they may just hope it lasts a few years. However, there are people out there who have a car from 15 to 20 years and sometimes longer than that! Car maintenance is how that happens.  You must focus on a few things that are necessities when it comes to the life of your car. Find out what they are with these Car Maintenance Tips to Give Your Car a Long Life.

Car Maintenance Tips to Give Your Car a Long Life

Do regular oil changes. The most important thing you can do to make your car last 15 years or more is to complete regular oil changes. The oil in the engine is the lifeblood of your vehicle, so to speak. Make sure you get an oil change every 3,000 miles!  Whether you do this at home, or you take it to a dealership or local repair shop doesn’t matter as long as it gets done.

Take care of those tires. Most experts would agree that the tires are often neglected on the vehicle. In fact, your tires are what keep your vehicle going at the right speed and direction. One task you must do to make your car last 15 years or more is to keep those tires inflated. The safety of your vehicle depends on how you keep your tires.

This also includes car maintenance things like rotating your tires regularly, getting your tires balanced, and even making sure your braking system is maintained and up to date.

Have your car inspected. Not everyone wants to spend the money on their vehicle. But you must determine which is cheaper, a $20,000 car loan or a $2,000 car bill. By having your car inspected, they can catch things before they go bad. There may be loose wires under the hood or a leak, a certified mechanic can catch these issues before they get terribly bad. Keep this in mind the next time you want to want to skip the checkup.

You may have also had the “check engine light” come on in your vehicle.  While most auto parts shops will check this for you and let you know what is causing the error, it’s a great idea to have one of these Auto Code Detector systems on hand when you have an older vehicle.  You’ll find the older the car, the more that light will pop up as sensors and filters are in need of changing.

Go easy on the miles. Another way to make your car last 15 years or more is to not drive it a ton. Most people who have cars that last a long time don’t drive a lot. By reducing the number of miles, you drive, your car can last longer! Think about it, your car is going to have a hard time keeping up if you put 30,000 miles on it a year, opposed to 10,000.

Carpool when available. Walk to local destinations.  Ride our bicycle or even invest in a city transit pass wen you are able to do so.  Reserve driving your vehicle for times when it is necessary not just convenient.

Be a smart driver. If you are a smart driver, your vehicle is going to last a lot longer. This may not be what you consider basic car maintenance, but it truly is.  Not running over pot holes and not slamming on your brakes are two ways to drive smart. Also, paying attention to what is going on around you and being a defensive driver are also ways in which you can be a smart driver.

Work with a certified mechanic. Does anyone else feel that when they send their vehicle into the shop, there is a ton wrong with it? A tip you need to know is that you NEED to work with a certified mechanic. Work with someone you trust when it comes to your vehicle! Price and recommendations are everything when it comes to finding a mechanic you trust.

Making your car last 15 years or more is about taking care of it. Routine car maintenance is a must for stretching that car for a long life of use for your family.  When something breaks down, you must fix it right away. You can’t let a problem go for a long period and expect your vehicle to this long. I’d love to hear your tips for making a vehicle last 15 years or more.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
