Watch for weekly sales. Sometimes, they are crazy good. Usually, they are one-day sales, so when you see them, you will need to be ready to stock up, but you can get meat, household care and produce for really cheap sometimes with these weekly and one day sales.

Compare prices for staples in-store. You may not be aware of this, but many stores employ a tactic to get you to pay more for food staples They place a staple in more than one spot in the store offering different prices and different brands. Whole foods does this with many of their bulk items. Buying in bulk may or may not be cheaper when you compare it to the cost per pound in packages on the shelf.

Use coupons. You can get coupons for organic, whole, and GMO-free foods directly from manufacturers and some are even popping up in papers and online. Plus, you can print off coupons on the Whole Foods website for in-store brands as well as name brand items. Additionally, Whole Foods Market has a newsletter that is in print available at the customer service counter and in-store displays that has coupons that last for several months.

Buy private label products. Whole Foods Market has a private Label brand called 365 and like other private label brand items at other stores, these products are often made by the same big name brands in the same factories, just labeled differently. This means you can get high-quality foods and household items for a fraction of the price.

Use your own grocery bags and containers. If you use your own grocery bags, you can get a discount. It isn’t much at all, but if you frequently shop at Whole Foods Market, you will see it add up over time. In the bulk food section, you can save money by bringing in your own clean and sanitized containers and having them weighed at customer service before you shop. Not only does this save you from paying for the cost of the container, but you also skip a step at home when it comes to putting things away.

Only buy what you need and not an ounce more. Many people do not know Whole Foods Market will open packages and give you only what you want. This comes in handy if you are cooking for a small family or if you just need a cup of something that you don’t see yourself needing again before it spoils. No wasted food means no wasted money!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
