Winco is a great place to save on dairy-free food. Here are some tips on how to save money on dairy-free food at Winco.

Winco has a lot of great, affordable dairy-free options. Here are some tips on how to save money on dairy-free food at Winco.

I recently found out that I am lactose intolerant and I was not coincidentally feeling sick every time I ate ice cream! The idea of having to add dairy-free items to my grocery budget as well as gluten-free was a little bit daunting. However, buying dairy-free at Winco is surprisingly inexpensive. I haven’t even noticed a difference in my bills since going dairy-free. Here are some tips on how to save money on dairy-free food at Winco.

How to Save Money on Dairy-Free Food at Winco

Nut and soy milks – Winco has an amazing selection of nut milks. Mine has a section in the baking aisle with quarts of almond, rice, soy, hemp, oat, cashew, and coconut milk. Many of these milks come in vanilla and chocolate flavors as well, and they are around $2. I have even seen individual pouches of almond milk that are the perfect size for lunch boxes. I like to use plain cashew as a milk substitute for baking, and vanilla or chocolate almond milk in overnight oatmeal and smoothies. You can find half-gallons of more popular milks, such as almond and cashew, in the regular dairy section for good prices.

Yogurt Alternatives – Yogurt was one of the hardest things for me to give up, so I switched to Silk Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative. Winco had the best price of any store in my area. If you are just lactose intolerant, they carry lactose-free yogurt at good prices as well.

Lactose-Free Ice Cream – If you are lactose intolerant but can have dairy, lactose-free ice cream is an awesome treat! My local Winco carries Breyers Lactose-Free Ice Cream for the best price I’ve ever seen.

Nutritional Yeast – If you are dairy-free, you will see this ingredient in tons of recipes because it adds a cheesy flavor. Winco carries in the bulk section where you can buy it by the pound for a low price.

Dairy-Free Margarine – I get 15 oz tubs of Smart Balance at Winco for under $3. Of the dairy-free butter spreads I’ve tried, I think it tastes the most like real butter.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
