How to Make a Butterfly Garden Bouquet

Supplies needed:

  • Glass canning jar
  • Soil
  • Craft moss
  • Butterfly picks
  • Optional plastic bugs (we used a faux ladybug)

We found everything we needed at our local craft and dollar store. Butterfly picks and moss can be purchased for just $1, making this one Mother’s Day craft that won’t leave you broke.

For the soil, simply dig some up from your own backyard. You don’t need to use anything fancy. If you have real moss, feel free to use it as well.

Directions:
1. Begin by filling the jar 3/4 full of soil. Pack it in well.

2. Next, layer on some moss to fill in the rest of the jar. You can even let a little overflow if you wish. Pack it all in tightly.

3. Add your butterfly picks. Press the picks down to the bottom of the jar and bend the stems so they look natural and like they are flying in various directions.

4. Add the optional bugs. We added a tiny pretend ladybug for a really natural and quite whimsical look.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
