This Thanksgiving, dress up your table with a Painted Canvas Utensil Holder. You can craft your own, adding the perfect touch of color to your place settings. You only need a few common crafting supplies, and you don’t even have to sew. Here is how you can get started creating your own utensil holder. It is the perfect way to dress up your fall table for less.

Supplies needed:

  • Light, thin canvas
  • Assorted craft paints in fall colors
  • Paint brush
  • Silk fall leaves
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun, hot glue

Painted Canvas Utensil Holder materials

At your local craft store, look in the scrapbook paper section for pre cut pieces of canvas. You can find them for less than $2 each and they are the perfect size and thickness for this project.

Directions:
1. Begin by folding your canvas. You will first fold it in half. Secure the edges where the ends meet with glue. However, be sure to leave your top open as this is where you silverware will go. Press the ends until secure.
2. Cut a few inches off the bottom of your folded canvas to shorten the holder. Then, fold the canvas over about ½ an inch. Secure the edge of your fold with glue. A pocket will now be formed.
3. Once your glue is dry, you can start painting your utensil holder. To do this, dip your brush in paint and brush it across the canvas. It won’t cover right away, you may need to do several coats. Or, leave the paint as is for a more natural look.
4. Clean your brush off in between color changes. Apply stripes to the canvas to your liking.
5. When the craft paint is dry, you can finish the utensil holder by gluing a silk fall leaf to the front. Just snip a leaf, add some glue, and press.

Painted Canvas Utensil Holder process

Your painted canvas utensil holder is now complete. You can fold your napkin and insert it if you wish, then add your fork, knife, and spoon. Set the entire packet down on top of the plate. You will see how lovely this looks, and your guests will notice too!

Gather your supplies and give this hand painted canvas utensil holder a try. It is such a unique and custom way to dress up your Thanksgiving table.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
