There are some places that tend to get over-looked when it comes to staying on top of a clean home. Blinds are one of those places. It’s easy to do especially since they aren’t something you are looking at every time you clean.
Cleaning your blinds keeps them in good shape for many years to come and it also really helps you combat a serious buildup of allergens and dust in your home. Here are some Tips for Deep Cleaning Your Blinds in case you have neglected yours for too long.
Tips for Deep Cleaning Your Blinds
First, it somewhat matters what kind of blinds you are cleaning. The most common are vertical (made of aluminum or plastic), horizontal (made of wood, faux wood or plastic) and fabric (often called Roman shades). Let’s look at how to clean each type:
How to Clean Vertical Blinds:
Carefully remove each blind and place them outside on the lawn and spray off. You can also place them in a bath tub to soak with some dish soap. Gently scrub them if they need it and turn the shower on to rinse them. Be careful when hanging them as this is the part where they tend to break. Lay a towel down under them when they are hung and allow to air dry.
How to Clean Horizontal blinds:
This cleaning technique will depend on what material your blinds are made of. Generally, wood blinds or faux wood blinds will be finished with something that helps them stay mostly dust-free, but if you need to clean them, make sure to use a mild cleaner made for wood and dry them.
For plastic or aluminum horizontal blinds, you can clean them in a similar manner as the vertical ones. a good soak int he tub and gentle scrubbing works well. Again, make sure to be gentle with them when moving them or hanging. They tend to bend easily.
How to Clean Roman Shades (Fabric):
Generally, a good vacuum can be all you need to get this style of blinds clean, but if they are super dirty, I like to use a microfiber cloth that has been dampened with soapy water and gently wipe off the areas needing attention. I then allow it to air dry.
You can avoid having to do too much deep cleaning with your blinds by simply giving them a good dusting with a cloth or a vacuum a couple of times per month. You can even apply some pledge to help repel dust as well.
