10 Tips for an Organized Family- When you have kids, clutter and activities can quickly take over. Keep your family organized with these helpful tips.

When it comes to challenges for a family, organization is often at the top of the list. We have stuff and lots of it. When you have kids, the amount of stuff and activities you have multiplies until it takes control of your home and life. It doesn’t have to be that way. By finding a system that works for you and creating good habits, you can reclaim your home and family time and enjoy a new calm. These 10 Tips for an Organized Family will get your started.

10 Tips for an Organized Family

Use a family calendar. A family calendar is a great way to help prevent scheduling conflicts and to figure them out when they do happen. Place the calendar in a central location or try a digital one like Cozi.

Color code the kids’ belongings. From dishes, to laundry baskets and toothbrushes, keeping kids organized is a breeze when color coded. If you would like a more subdued color coding, duct tape is a great way to do it. A small strip wrapped around the handle of a tooth brush or the top of a laundry basket makes it easy to tell which things belongs to each child.

Find a place for everything. Sometimes it is hard to do this, but finding a place for everything pays off fast. Organize one room at a time and find homes for things that are scattered around. Clutter breeds disorganization and spreads like a wildfire to other rooms in your home.

Invest in a filing box. Filing boxes are great because you can keep one right by where the mail and other paper items come in. Keep a recycling bin near by. File everything as it comes in and toss the rest. Leaving it on the table to be sorted later can leave an open door for everyone to drop something on the table and run.

Create a chore chart. Chore charts are great for the whole family. Yes, even mom. It makes it easy to see what has been done and what needs to be done. It is also an eye opener for the kids and helps them realize how much work mom does to keep things going.

Purge everything you can. Get rid of anything that is broken in any way. Broken items create unnecessary clutter. The less you have the less you need to keep organized.

Give puzzles numbers. Place the number along the bottom of the box. Then number the back of each piece making it easy to return to the right place. I learned this young from a teacher. This works with nearly anything that has many small pieces.

Add bins everywhere. Adding organizational bins to the fridge, freezer, cabinets, pantry, bathroom, and everywhere else can keep the house organized. Label everything well so there is no need to pull out multiple things to get what someone wants or needs. This will reduce mess left behind when in a hurry.

Go vertical with storage. Just like vertical gardens, you can keep your home organized by moving storage upward in your home with shelves, cute hooks, and creative hanging solutions.

Use a homemaking planner. A planner is great for any part of your life. Why would homemaking and organization be any different? Organizational and family binders are growing in popularity.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
