1. From seed to fruit.
Use illustrations to study how an apple goes from seed to fruit. Follow the progression to show how amazing it is for a little seed to grow into an apple tree that produces hundreds of apples.

2. Plant your own seeds.
Plant your own apple seeds to show what seeds need to thrive. Discuss soil conditions, water, sunlight, fertilizer, and the basic care of seeds so they can mature into a healthy plant.

3. Which pests are attracted to apples?
Humans aren’t the only ones who like apples. Study the various pests attracted to apples that farmers need to be wary of. You can also look at the various animals and critters that enjoy apples as part of their daily diet.  Horses are an excellent example.

4. How an apple decomposes.
When left exposed to air or heat, and apple can quickly begin decomposing. What are the stages of decomposition in apples? Cut an apple open and let it sit out for several days so children can document the changes the apple goes through.

5. What prevents apple yellowing?
There have been many methods suggested over the years that are suppose to prevent apple yellowing. Some suggest dipping the cut apples in lemon juice, others say to leave the apples at room temperature. Explore these various methods and test them out to see which one truly prevents yellowing in apples.

6. How many apple varieties are there?
Children will be amazed to learn that there are dozens of various apple varieties out there. Explore the various names, colors, and tastes via an apple taste test. Give them a chance to explore the various types of apples and pick their favorite.

7. Create a graph.
Once you try out the apples, create a graph that shows the information you collected. You can graph the different apples and which ones they preferred. You can create a graph showing the various characteristics of each apple as well.

Apples are good for so much more than just sitting in a fruit bowl and snacking on! Grab a dozen apples in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors and give some of these science themed activities a try. They help create a wonderful hands on experience for children that can’t be beat!
