2 kids playing with water guns in the backyard

Bored kids stuck at home on a hot day is not a fun combination! Here are some ideas for summer water gun fun for kids.

Growing up, a good water gun was all that was needed for hours of childhood fun. There are countless things you can do with a good water gun and only a handful of them will get you in trouble. If you want your kids to enjoy some water gun fun, you can do some things to limit those problems. In fact, there are a ton of cool suggestions to make them even more fun!

Water Gun Fun for Kids

Here are some water gun fun tips to keep the excitement high and the problems limited:

Create a Refill Station

The one thing my mom always hated about water guns was the constant foot traffic in and out of her home to refill our guns. Water would be from one end of the house to the other. To solve this, you need only to fill up a kiddy pool or bucket for refills outside. Problem solved.

Snazz up the Water

Colored water is the best when you are shooting others with a water gun. Why shoot people with plain old water when you can color the water with dye and make a laser beam? Make sure you wear old clothes or else you might have some problems in the laundry room.

Establish a No-Shoot Zone

Inevitably we would have someone be fed up with catching a stream of water in the eyes. To solve this problem, mom or dad can set up a no-shoot zone in the yard. Anyone standing in the no-shoot zone is off-limits. Broken rules lead to time outs from the fun.

Play Water Gun Tag

Tag with a water gun is about the most fun thing you can imagine. If everyone wears white t-shirts, you will have no question who gets tagged or not.

Give little kids the bigger guns!

Little ones are always at a disadvantage, so give them the heavy artillery. Why let them get soaked while the big kids have all the fun? Instead, load them up with a huge water gun that shoots a ton of water in one blast. Give the big kids the little soakers that require more accuracy. This evens the playing field and will empower the little ones to have great fun.

The “no-shoot zone” is a good idea.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
