I try to be very careful about what I put on my kid’s skin. I prefer to use clothing and hats to provide protection from the sun, but that is not always enough. With ever-changing guidelines about what sunscreen ingredients are safe, it just seems easier to me to make homemade sunscreen rather than trying to decipher the list of chemicals in the ingredient list on the back of a bottle of sunscreen lotion. And if you have ever seen the prices for the all-natural sunscreens, you will find that making sunscreen yourself is a much more frugal alternative!
Homemade Sunscreen Recipes

Wellness Mama has a Homemade Sunscreen Recipe and a recipe for an easy homemade sunscreen that uses lotion as a base. She includes a link for making homemade lotion, which is useful if you are looking for a natural lotion recipe.
Homemade sunscreens are not as waterproof as store-bought sunscreens, so be sure to reapply more sunscreen after being in the water or sweating.
In addition to using homemade sunscreen, thin clothing, and hats, I also protect my kids from the sun, by setting up their play area in a shady spot in the yard and avoiding the sun during peak hours. We play outside in the morning, come inside before lunch times and then stay inside doing arts and crafts for several hours before venturing back out in the late afternoon.
