10 Tangy Onion Recipes including a french onion soup recipe, pickled onion recipe, baked bloomin' onion recipe and how to freeze onions.

The onion is something you will find in pretty much every recipe in some form or another, whether it is onion powder, onion salt or just chopped onions by themselves. The onion provides such great flavor to recipes that it is hard to leave it out. When you consider the variety of onions available for your many recipes, they opens things up even more. Here are some tips on how to preserve onions, as well as 10 tangy onion recipes to use them in, in case you want the onion to take center stage.

How to Preserve Onions

Onions can be dehydrated, frozen, or pickled to save them for later use. The two most practical and versatile ways to preserve onions are freezing and dehydrating. Here are some tips for freezing and dehydrating.

How to Freeze Onions

Onions don’t need to be blanched to be frozen, but it is a good idea to take the skin off and cut them. If you will be using them in most recipes, it is best to dice them. When you have then diced, simply place them in zipper style bags. You may want to place your bags of onions in a second container since the smell can leach into other things in your freezer. This technique works well for all kinds of onions and chives.

How to Dehydrate Onions

This can be tricky, but it is worth it if you happen to have an over-abundance of onions. I suggest checking out the step by step instructions for dehydrating onions at Self-Reliant School. She also tells you how to get the onion smell out of your dehydrator.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
