easy garlic green beans in a serving bowl

This garlic green beans recipe can be made with fresh green beans or frozen green beans.

If you have read the ingredient list on my vegetable recipes you probably think I am too lazy to cook any recipe that calls for more than 5 ingredients. Well, you are right, I am lazy, but that is not the reason my vegetable recipes have so few ingredients. The real reason is that I genuinely enjoy vegetables and I want to be able to taste them. I usually cook vegetables with only one or two spices, so my vegetables don’t get lost in the seasoning.

This garlic green bean recipe only calls for 4 ingredients. You can use fresh green beans or frozen ones. If you use fresh green beans, you will need to steam or boil them before they are sauteed in butter and garlic. If you use frozen green beans, they will need to be thawed before sauteeing them. Either way, this is a quick and easy green bean recipe.

Cooking Fresh Green Beans

You can steam or boil fresh green beans. In the below recipe, I include directions for steaming the fresh green beans for 10 – 15 minutes in a double boiler before they are sauteed. If you don’t have a double boiler you can boil the fresh green beans for 10 minutes instead. Then drain the water from the green beans before sauteeing them.

Thawing Frozen Green Beans

If you don’t have fresh green beans, you can make this recipe with frozen green beans. You can skip steaming or boiling them if you are using frozen green beans. Just thaw the frozen green beans by putting them in a strainer and running hot water over them until they are thawed.

This simple garlic green beans recipe is delicious!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of whole uncooked green beans, rinsed, ends trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1/8 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper

Directions:

  1. Put green beans in a double boiler. fresh green beans in a double boiler
  2. Bring water to a boil. Cover with a lid and reduce heat.
  3. Steam the green beans for 10 – 15 minutes or until they are tender (the time will vary depending on the type and thickness of green beans). They can be a little underdone because they will be cooked some more in the next step.
  4. Add butter and garlic to a large skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until the butter melts. Add the green beans and pepper; toss gently until the beans are coated and saute until the green beans are heated through.

Yum! Do you have green beans already? The deer are eating mine as fast as they grow. If I get any, I'll give your recipe a try!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
