Homemade Flour Tortillas

Use this homemade flour tortilla recipe to easily make tortillas at home for your next Taco Tuesday!

Homemade Flour Tortillas

This Homemade Flour Tortilla Recipe is one that makes me feel like I can manage anything in the kitchen.  For years, I always grabbed those ready-made tortillas because I thought they would be entirely too difficult to make from scratch.  I have conquered breads, muffins, even souffles but tortillas were daunting.  How wrong I was!  This simple homemade flour tortilla recipe gives you a wonderful soft, moist, and flavorful tortilla that will honestly rival any you’ve ever tasted!

Homemade Flour Tortilla Recipe

Whether you are making quesadillas, tacos, or a wrap, this homemade flour tortilla recipe is a simple one you’ll be able to mix up in no time.  The hardest part of this recipe is waiting 30-45 minutes to let the dough rest before rolling it out and cooking.  While this recipe makes 8 medium flour tortillas, you may want to double this and make more if you have a larger family to feed.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups of All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Sea Salt
  • 1/4 Cup Butter Flavored Crisco or non-flavored vegetable shortening
  • 3/4 Cups of Warm Water (Approximately)

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, add flour, baking powder, and salt. Give a quick mix with a whisk or fork to help spread out dry ingredients.
  2. Add shortening, and mix well throughout dry ingredients. You want to create the tiniest of little “shortening beads” in your dough mixture.
  3. Slowly add in your water. You probably will not need the full amount of water! Just a tad bit under 3/4 cups! Mix well until you get a nice tacky ball.
  4. Cover and allow to rest 30 – 45 minutes.Homemade Flour Tortilla Recipe dough
  5. With a knife, cut the dough into 8 wedges, like that of pie. Roll each wedge into a round ball.
  6. With a rolling pin a on lightly floured surface, form the dough ball in a thin circular or semi-circular shape.
  7. Place a pan over a medium heat. Allow approximately 5 minutes to heat up before using. You will not use any type of spray, grease, or butter. This is a dry cooking technique.
  8. Place your tortilla in the hot pan and cook for approximately 30 seconds on each side.

Did you know that flour tortillas will also freeze well?  If you prefer to make larger batches all at once, you can easily freeze them after you cook and freeze them with waxed paper between them for an easy grab, heat and go wraps or tacos!

Thanks so much for the recipe. It has been years since I’ve made homemade tortilla’s, but I’ve been thinking about giving it a try and making some lately. We both love homemade tortilla’s, my father inlaw makes them a lot. Pinning!

I’ve tried several times to make homemade tortillas since we eat so many of them. Each time I roll the dough as thin as I can and toss it onto the hot comal only to have it shrink in size and thicken in height at the same time. But you’ve given me inspiration to try again, thanks for sharing. (stopping by from the Merry Monday Link Party)

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
