Instant Pot Split Pea Soup Recipe

This Instant Pot Split Pea Soup recipe allows you to enjoy a bowl of comforting soup in a fraction of the time of traditional methods.

Quick and Easy Instant Pot Split Pea Soup Recipe - Use the pressure cooker option on your Instant Pot to make pea soup in 30 minutes. Add sherry and a ham bone for extra flavor!

My husband loves my Crock Pot Split Pea Soup, but a slow cooker recipe requires that I remember to start dinner rather early in the day…and I am a bit forgetful. So after promising him all week that I would use the ham bone in the freezer to make split pea soup, and forgetting each day to start the slow cooker, I decided to use my Instant Pot as a Pressure Cooker and quickly make Split Pea Soup.

If you have an Instant Pot, you know it doubles as a pressure cooker. Split Pea Soup takes up to 8 hours in a slow cooker and about 3 hours on the stovetop, but only a little over 30 minutes in an Instant Pot or Pressure Cooker, so the time savings is quite significant. Another benefit to making split pea soup in an Instant Pot is that you do not have to soak the dried peas before cooking them.

Instant Pot Split Pea Soup Recipe

Ingredients:
  • 1 pound bag of dried split peas
  • 1 meaty ham bone
  • 2 stalks of celery, sliced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • ½ cup onion, diced
  • 3 cloves of garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons parsley
  • 2 teaspoons basil
  • 2 teaspoons marjoram
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 5 cups water
  • ½ cup sherry (optional)

Instant Pot Split Pea Soup Ingredients

Directions:

  1. Add the dried peas, ham bone, celery, carrots, onion, garlic, spices, water, and sherry to the Instant Pot. Stir to combine the ingredients.
  2. Secure the lid on the Instant Pot and make sure the valve is set to sealing. Push the manual button and ensure that “high pressure” has been selected. Set the time for 18 minutes.
  3. After the pea soup has cooked at high pressure for 18 minutes, allow the steam to release naturally for 12 minutes. Use a pot holder to flip the valve to release the remaining steam quickly.
  4. When all of the steam has been released, use a fork or an immersion blender to mash the ingredients and blend them together. Using an immersion blender to blend the split pea soup after cooking it in an Instant Pot
  5. Serve the split pea soup with additional sherry or croutons if you wish.

Note: If you want a smooth texture, but do not have an immersion blender, you can carefully ladle the soup into a blender and blend the soup in small batches until it is completely blended. The heat can change the fit of the lid on some blenders, so be sure to place a potholder over the top of the blender and then place pressure on the lid to keep the lid from coming off while being blended.

Yes, you can, but it will alter the flavor. If you want to use broth, I recommend using vegetable broth.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
