Kitchen Tip: Make-Do Food Processor

We lived in Southern California during the Northridge Earthquake. We were very fortunate and only had one item break! The glass blender attachment for my food processor was our only loss. (Disaster Tip: Instead of earthquake proofing your house, toddler proof it! My in-laws who were even closer to the epicenter than we were sustained much less damage than their neighbors and they give my wild son all of the credit. Back on topic, this post is supposed to be about kitchen tips). I told my grandma about the loss of my blender attachment and she told me to try using a canning jar until I found a replacement. She said back in the day, they were interchangeable. They were and they still are! I have since bought a new blender (it was less expensive than replacing the attachment), but occasionally I like the convenience of using a canning jar.

Take the base (including blade and gasket) off of your glass blender attachment.

Turn the base upside down and attach it to your canning jar.
Screw the base into your blender.
Chop, grate, or whip the contents.
If there are any leftovers, put a plastic lid on the jar and store it for your next cooking creation.

It is the mouth size of the canning jar that is important. They come in regular and wide mouth. A regular mouth canning jar fits most blenders.

Yes, you might find a jar that works in your recycling bin. I have used a peanut butter jar, a marshmallow cream jar, and a salsa jar instead of a canning jar in the past. Look for jars with ~2 1/2 in. diameter mouth.

You can buy canning jars, but usually only in cases of 12. You would probably have better luck buying just one at a thrift store or garage sale.

This sounds like it would work great for things like nuts- I used to have a tiny braun nut chopper/processor but it died after about 20 years.

But is there a standard size "canning jar" that works on any blender? And this is embarrassing, but I've never canned or jarred anything- do they sell them at the grocery store? Maybe one of my old jelly or condiment jars will work- I'll have to try some.

This is the best tip I have ever heard of!! I am just so sad that I threw away our blender last year. My toddler broke the glass part and I just assumed it could never be used again! ):

This is absolutely brilliant! I LOVE the idea about just putting a lid onto it for storage!

That's a neat idea! I would be nice to grind up nuts and store them in the fridge that way. No extra dirty dishes. HurraY!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
