These cake mix donuts look like miniature King Cakes! They are bright and fun with purple, green, and gold frosting drizzled over the donuts. Using a basic white cake mix is an easy way to make a treat to enjoy during your Mardi Gras celebration.

You can serve these for dessert as mini King Cakes or as a special breakfast treat on Fat Tuesday. Who could resist starting or ending the day with this King Cake Donut Recipe?

While this recipe uses a cake mix and premade colored icing, you can use your favorite white frosting or this homemade buttercream frosting to ice the donuts using the tips below.

Making the Icing for a King Cake

You can substitute white frosting or homemade buttercream frosting and then use food coloring to create the purple, green, and yellow frosting.

If you using white frosting and food coloring: separate the frosting into 3 separate bowls. Give each bowl a drop of food coloring (purple, green and yellow) and stir in the food coloring. Microwave each bowl of frosting for 5-10 second to soften. Scoop each colored frosting into a small sandwich baggy. Snip one corner using a pair of scissors and gently squeeze frosting from the baggy onto the treats in a back and forth motion. Repeat with the other colors.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
