Testing Doneness of Bundt Cakes

Usually recipes instruct you to insert a toothpick, and if it comes out clean, the cake is done.  That’s fine for a 2 inch deep cake pan, but how do you test the doneness of a Bundt cake?  A toothpick barely makes a dent in a Bundt cake or loaf pan. I have a 6 inch cake tester that I use for deep cakes, but it’s not necessary to buy one. In fact, I often lose my skinny cake tester in a kitchen drawer. When I lose my cake tester, I grab a skewer or an uncooked spaghetti noodle!  I just insert the noodle in the cake to see if the cake is done.

If you want to use something more elegant than a spaghetti noodle, but are prone to losing things, here is a set of 3 cake testers.

Great idea. I like the spaghetti suggestions better than a skewer just to prevent a larger hole being poked into the cake, but they are both great ideas!

    Who needs a cake tester?!

Awesome tip! I usually use a fork or knife, since we rarely have toothpicks… will HAVE to remember the spaghetti idea!! 🙂

of course our fun fancy stores out there don't want us to make do with a piece of spaghetti since they have "cake testers" available for $14.95! 😉

Neat idea (and perfect to link up to Works for Me Wednesday, if you like).

I usually use a toothpick and hope for the best. LOL I don't make many Bundt cakes.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
