Disorganization Leads to Food Waste Friday

The last two weeks have been a bit chaotic. I have not made a menu plan, nor have I done a very good job of keeping up on the odds and ends in the refrigerator. All of the items below, except for the spinach, are of unknown vintage. Though some of them maybe safe to eat, I didn’t want to chance it, so they found a new home in the compost bin.

I am determined to not repeat this horrible waste next week. I will have a menu plan and use tape to place the date on the lids. I will also be participating in a Pantry Party on Monday at The Thrifty Country Woman, where I will be share how I use items from my pantry, fridge, and/or freezer to create a meal. And of course, I will continue participating in Food Waste Friday at The Frugal Girl because it helps keep me accountable!

    Alea,
I admit too that sometimes the week gets busy and I have what to do what you do and throw it in the compost bin. Ahh but maybe if I took a picture of it like you did It would make me think next time. Great post.
See you at the pantry party at Thrifty Country Woman's on Monday

That's a great idea about putting the dates on the leftovers! Sometimes I get so busy that the days all blur together and Jamie will remind me that we had that over a week ago! See you on Monday!

  3. Oh no, I hate weeks like this, but the upside is they make you determined to do better next time around. After a couple of shameful weeks I had no food waste this week, so I'm really pleased!
I'm intrigued by the pantry party – off to check it out now!

Good luck with next week :)

  4. I hate those weeks when everything's so busy that you just lose track of everything–specifically food waste. I've often found that having a terrible waste week motivates me to try harder in the future, though.

  5. To avoid waste today, this post and your previous one on croutons has just motivated me to go whip up some croutons with the 1/4 loaf of bread on my counter that is of "unknown vintage." (Yes, I will look at the date, but I like your phrase.)

When my refrig gets too full, things get pushed to the back and overlooked. We had to eat all the leftover before we left for our trip to CT so now we are stating fresh.

My daughter-in-law visited and didn't have to bring her own food! I made her a Cheesy Potato Soup and a cream cheese pie using gf ginger snap cookies as crust. Thanks for all your suggestions.

  7. Nice site, nice and easy on the eyes and great content too.
