Eating the Rainbow: Vegetable Garden Update

September 4, 2010 by Alea Milham 4 Comments

I tell everyone that I plant vegetables in unusual colors for my kids. I say that “kids like eating colorful food. It makes meal times more fun…” But I also tell people that I am reading the Percy Jackson books so I can discuss them with my children. And I tell people that I watchRead More

Oatmeal and Cottage Cheese Pancakes

September 3, 2010 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

This morning I discovered day old cottage cheese and a little bit of milk that was 2 days past its sell-by date. I don’t know how either of them were overlooked. They both passed the sniff check. Then I was brave and did the taste test and again they both passed. So I decided toRead More

Easy Gluten-Free Sandwich Thins

September 1, 2010 by Alea Milham Leave a Comment

This idea was inspired by the Bread Slabs in Cooking for Isaiah. Nardone used her basic pizza recipe to make thin bread slabs for sandwiches. I used my basic pizza recipe and shaped the dough into rough circles, so my kids can use them in place of hamburger buns. Ingredients: 1 1/4 cup brown riceRead More

Gluten-Free Bisquick Review and Scone Recipe

September 1, 2010 by Alea Milham Leave a Comment

“Bisquick was invented to make men think that they know how to cook” my daughter reflected after observing my husband’s pride over making waffles once again for his family. Until three years ago when my daughter joined me in my gluten-free diet, my husband would get up early on Saturday mornings and make a double Read More

Repurposing a Drink Bucket

September 1, 2010 by Alea Milham Leave a Comment

I know you are thinking that I am going to share a creative way to use your drink bucket as a planter. I’m not. I like pretty things, especially flowers, but I am more of a function before form type of person. Below are a couple of practical ways that I repurpose my bucket when weRead More

Batch Broiling and Pasta Salad Recipe

September 1, 2010 by Alea Milham 14 Comments

Now that our weather is cooling off, I can resume batch broiling boneless, skinless chicken breasts. I like broiling chicken because cooking at high heat seals in the juices creating a tender piece of meat. The seasoning tends to stay on the meat a little better than when grilling. But the thing I love mostRead More

Grinding Coriander (Cilantro Seeds)

August 30, 2010 by Alea Milham 9 Comments

Last week, I shared how I dry my herbs in a bag. One of the advantage to drying herbs this way is that I can easily dry and collect cilantro seeds and use them to make coriander. When I grind coriander, I only do about 1 tablespoon of seeds at a time. Coriander is mostRead More

Menu Plan – Week of August 30th

August 29, 2010 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

This week my primary goal is to use up as many vegetables from my garden as possible. My second goal is to create enough food that my husband and oldest son will not starve when I go out of town this weekend with the other kids. Instead of planning my meals so that leftovers canRead More

Green Beans with Garlic

August 28, 2010 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

The green beans have only come in dribs and drabs for most of the summer. However, I am finally harvesting them fast enough to serve green beans as a side dish, rather than merely using them as an ingredient in soup. I prefer to eat my veggies with just enough seasoning to highlight their naturalRead More

My 3 Year Old’s Flower Garden

August 27, 2010 by Alea Milham 7 Comments

Included in my post on gardening with children was the tip to allow children to have their own garden. Below is Andrew’s garden. He picked out all of the flowers himself and helped plant them. It is heavy on orange flowers because one of our gardening rules is that he is only allowed to pickRead More

Roasted Eggplant Hummus

August 27, 2010 by Alea Milham 11 Comments

When I was at Trader Joe’s last week I noticed that they sold eggplant hummus. I just happened to have excess eggplant from my garden and this seemed like a delicious way to use it up. I picked up some tahini sauce and decided to try my hand at making homemade roasted eggplant hummus. I placedRead More

Book Review: Cooking for Isaiah

August 25, 2010 by Alea Milham Leave a Comment

After learning of her son’s intolerance to gluten and dairy, Silvana Nardone set out to “blur the lines between gluten-free and gluten-full”. Like every other mother of a child with food intolerances, she did not want for her child to long for something that he could not eat. She wanted Isaiah to stop thinking aboutRead More

Extending Your Growing Season with a Container Garden

August 24, 2010 by Alea Milham 8 Comments

Container gardens are not just for apartment dwellers!  Even though I live on several acres and have a nice sized garden, I have a container garden. We have a short growing season, coupled with a 30 degree temperature swing every day. This means that spring and fall are pretty inhospitable to plants that like warmRead More

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
