15 DIY Christmas Decor Ideas- Homemade decorations are an affordable way to celebrate Christmas throughout your home. Check out these fun and easy ideas.

Yesterday, I shared how we decorated our home with Nativity Scenes. While we enjoy decorating our home with religious decorations we also decorate with just-for-fun decorations like snowmen and nutcrackers too.

Each of our children’s rooms are decorated with a theme. We didn’t mean to create themed rooms, it just sort of happened. My daughter’s room is decorated in angels, my oldest son’s room is decorated with nutcrackers, and my youngest son’s room is decorated with snow men. We also put a small, lit tree in each of their rooms too.

I know. We are that family, the one who decorates the entire house for Christmas. I think I enjoy decorating for Christmas more than any other aspect of celebrating Christmas. I am not sure why, but I find all of the greenery and white lights soothing. We leave our decorations up until the day after the Epiphany (Epiphany is celebrated on January 6).

While some of our decorations are bought, my favorite decorations are the ones we have made or have received as a gift. Below I have created a list of 15 DIY Christmas Decor Ideas. Most of them are easy DIY projects that require little skill and are inexpensive to make.

15 DIY Christmas Decor Ideas

  1. DIY Burlap Place mats / Second Chance to Dream- These are simple and would make a great touch to your Christmas dinner table especially if you made custom ones for each gust! This would be a great project to get the kids to do.
  2. Hymnal Angel / The Happy Housewife- This sets off the spirit of the season with a great upcycle! Older kids and teens might like to create these for gifts.
  3. DIY Yarn Christmas Trees / Emmy Mom- I absolutely love these simple to make trees because they are so customizable. If you are one that likes to choose different colors and themes each year, this is a project that is sure to please.
  4. Thrifted No-Sew Tablecloth Tree Skirt / A Night Owl Blog- I’m always looking for a good no-sew project that can upcycle as well since it combines my 2 loves- thrifting and crating!
  5. Felt Christmas Tree Tutorial / Covered in Mod Podge- Not only is this one a fun little project and way to decorate, but it becomes a great way to keep kids occupied as they can decorate the “tree” over and over!
  6. Tin Can Snowman / Practically Functional- These are simple and fun to make for even those of us that don’t have a lot of crafting skill.
  7. Terra Cotta Snowman / One Creative Mommy- Another great upcycle is this cute craft for using those small pots we all have hanging around from spring. You could even make these really large and use them to decorate a porch or patio.
  8. Giant Christmas Decor/ Smart School House- I can’t get enough of these giant versions of things for Christmas decor. It makes you feel like a kid again! I think these would make your outdoors so magical!
  9. Dollar Store Gingerbread Village / White Oak Shop- I love a good budget craft and this one is so creative! It would work for any decor style and I love how she styled it on her stove.
  10. DIY Delivery Worker Snack Station Giant Hot Chocolate/ In The Playroom- This one is not only cute, but functional! It’s perfect for spreading some Christmas Cheer to all the delivery workers that are Santa’s helpers dropping off those gifts you ordered.
  11. Easy Sock Snowman / Premeditated Leftovers- This is one cute snowman you can make that is so simple kids can do it with supervision. A great use for those socks that seem to end up without a pair.
  12. Distressed Scrabble JOY tiles / Tatertots and Jello- I love that since this is so easy to personalize you can choose which words you would like such as “Joy”, “Peace” Love” or “Noel”.
  13. DIY Christmas Village House / Kathe With an E- This easy craft is a good one to spend some time doig with a friend or the family. You could each contribute a building or house and have a unique Christmas village keepsake to pull out every year.
  14. Faux Birch Logs Using Pool Noodles/ Design Dazzle- This is ingenious! If you love the look of birch but don’t have a way to get them near you, turning pool noodles into these logs might be the way to go.
  15. Ribbon Candy Wreath / Petal + Ply- This incredibly easy craft will look adorable on any door this holiday season.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
