Each year we make several new Christmas ornaments for our tree. Some years I have simply picked up some ceramic ornaments from Michael’s and some paint. One year the kids went to town with pipe cleaners and tri-beads. Other years, we have been more creative and upcycled items from around the house to create ornaments. Each year when I pull out all the homemade ornaments, I am reminded of all the kids stages and interests as they are reflected in what they chose to create.
Handmade ornaments have sentimental value, but they are usually quite inexpensive to make as well. I am sharing tutorials for 15 Homemade Christmas Ornaments below. Most of these ornament use common household items. Many of the ornaments below allow you to upcycle something that might otherwise end up in the trash like old light bulbs, junk mail, corrugated card board, or canning lids.
If you do need to pick up supplies to make your ornaments, wait for the sales at your local craft stores. You should be able to find holiday craft supplies on sale for 30% – 60% off in the next couple of weeks. If you haven’t already, you should sign up to receive coupons mailed to you from your local craft and sewing stores. Michael’s doesn’t even make you print out your coupon, you can open your email on your phone and show it to the cashier to receive your discount.
