Quitting caffeine is something that some people feel is impossible and it is easy to see why. Caffeine is highly addictive and it can make you feel like death warmed over when you step away. Like quitting cigarettes, there is also a physical aspect to it. That morning cup of coffee, soda, or energy drink can be quite powerful. So how do you get off the mouse wheel? If you’re serious about giving up your favorite drink, try these 6 Easy Steps to Quitting Caffeine.

Talk with Your Doctor- Before you ever decide to quit something like caffeine, you need to sit down with your doctor and talk it over. Health conditions and various other factors can make it dangerous and you need to get the all clear first. Keep this in mind before you get started!

Find a Healthy Replacement- This is huge and it is something that is often overlooked. What usually happens is the opposite. If you have no plan, you will likely pick up a new bad habit to replace the old caffeine habit. Some common examples include smoking, drinking, overeating, and sugar. Instead, plan ahead to replace that habit with something positive like exercise, water, and veggies.

Find a Partner- While you may not be able to find a local partner, you can always find a support group online. Talk to your friends, family, and co-workers to see if they are up for joining you. If you get no takers, get to typing online. You can find tons of support whenever you need it.

Remove All Caffeine from Your Home- If the caffeine is there, you will always be tempted. Why make it harder on yourself? Dump it and forget it.

Get Back on the Horse- You are going to slip and fall without a doubt. Go ahead and expect it, but have the determination to get right back on your feet and start again. Persistence is the key to surviving this difficult task.

Reward Yourself with Something Fun- Each week you go without a caffeine, reward yourself with something meaningful. Don’t make your rewards unhealthy, however. Find something you love that is clearly good for you and reward yourself in that way. This will ensure that you are changing your mindset about what you do to your body.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
