Date nights at home are a great way to save money, but they can get a little routine. Here are 6 ways to make date nights at home more exciting.

One of my best pieces of advice on strengthening your relationship with your spouse is the have date nights and make them a priority. The problem is, if you read any budget date night article, you will likely see the suggestion of doing date nights at home. This is an excellent way to save money, but let’s face it, it can get rather boring and routine after a few times. Here are 6 ways to make date nights at home more exciting.

6 Ways to Make Date Nights at Home More Exciting

Ask someone to watch the kids – Even though you are having date night at home, it doesn’t mean the kids need to be there. Enlist someone to babysit while you have your date and you may find that you can get into the romantic mood easier as well as feel freer to stay up as late as you want and focus all on each other.

Pick a theme for your date night – If movie nights are starting to get boring, go with a theme instead. Make all of your food and plans fit that theme. The creative aspect of this allows you to really get excited about it and do something different. It also may help you feel like you aren’t at home since it’s out of the normal element. Plus, the teamwork of getting it ready can also bring you closer.

Create a different atmosphere– We are comfortable in our own home. This can mean that we are fine with our messes and clutter. To create a different atmosphere, consider cleaning up and decorating for your date. Pull out the candles and eat by candlelight. Throw some pillows and a blanket on the floor and have an indoor picnic. You might even consider creating a different atmosphere in your main room for the date with draperies on furniture.

Have your date in your yard – Who says your date at home as to be indoors? If weather permits, take it outside! Why not set up a tent in your backyard and have dinner there? Or cuddle up on the stars? You could also enlist the help of older kids (teens or pre-teens) and have them ‘wait’ on you while you enjoy a dinner together on the deck.

Have a double date at home – If you have friends that are looking for an inexpensive date night, why not invite them over for a double date at home? Get out the board games and have some fun! You could also do karaoke with the many apps available on streaming devices now. Just have your friends bring some snacks and get ready for a night of fun.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
