10 Frugal and Fun Date Ideas. Check out these frugal and fun date ideas, including both free date ideas and low cost date ideas.

Date nights are essential for any marriage or relationship to work. When you find the time to spend with each other, you are able to reconnect and renew your relationship. Another reason why date night is essential is it gives time away from the kids, time away from work, and a change of scenery to start up new conversations without distractions of everyday life.

Date nights also don’t have to be just going out to eat or heading to the movies every Friday night. You can mix up the ideas, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money for it to be enjoyable or romantic.  Here are 10 frugal and fun date ideas for you to try with your special someone.

10 Frugal and Fun Date Ideas

Picnic in the Park

A picnic is one of the most romantic and free things that you can do together as a couple. Pack your favorite meals, snacks, and even wine (if permitted where you are heading), and plan an afternoon or a night out with each other.

Camping Out for the Day or Night

Spending the night outdoors in the backyard or at a nearby campsite is a great way to get close by the campfire. If you can’t get an overnight sitter, just an evening on the beach or at a bonfire can be a great way to spend time together.

Camping Inside

If the weather is not agreeable or you simply don’t have the time, camp inside with some microwave S’mores, blankets (in a fort!) and a good movie.

Free Museum Days

Many museums offer one or two days a week at certain times when there is free or reduced admission. Check in your local area for these times and play tourist for the day or evening.

Art Classes

A fun date night that is a growing trend is art classes in the evening that are wine or beer events. These classes are usually an hour or two long and are less than what you would spend to go to the movies with popcorn.

Bike Ride Together

Take a bike ride around your city. If you don’t own bikes, check out some local places that rent out bikes for an hour or for the day, and ask them what spots you should check out.

Escape to the Rooftop

Take a trip to a rooftop of a building that you have access to so you can gaze at the stars together. Bring a blanket and some sparklers to make it fun! If the night is chilly, make sure to bring cocoa or hot tea.

Nerf War

Grab a couple of Nerf guns and turn your house into a war zone. If it is a summer evening, why not play like kids and do a water gun fight?

Make Pizzas Together

Pizza is a great dish to make together. Mix and match your favorite toppings and take turns seeing who can toss their dough up the highest.

Local Theater

One really fun activity is to check out local theater plays. Whether it’s a high school or your community theater, it’s a great chance to spend time together and enjoy the arts at a discount.

Volunteering together can also be fun and meaningful. I really like OneBrick as they offer one-time volunteer opportunities without the need for an ongoing commitment:

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
