7 Tips for Painting Your Own Furniture
1. Begin by sanding.
Your first step will be to thoroughly sand the piece. This will help remove any varnish and film that could prevent your paint from adhering. Don’t forget to wear a face mask so you don’t inhale any of the particles. Sand the surface well and don’t forget the edges and corners. The surface when done should feel smooth to the touch and not gritty or uneven.
2. Wash the surface well.
Wipe the dust away and clean the surface of the piece with a soap such as Dawn. Don’t saturate the piece, just clean it well and take care to remove any dirt or residue. When done, be sure to wipe it clean and allow the surface to dry completely.
3. Remove any hardware.
If your furniture piece has handles or drawer pulls, now is the time to remove them. This way they don’t get any paint on them, and you can always color them separately if you wish. If you wish to leave them as is, go ahead and give them a good scrubbing to remove any residue, dust, or dirt.
4. Prime the surface.
A good primer will help the paint adhere well and make your paint job last. Apply two coats of primer and be sure to allow the primer to dry well in between coats. Be sure to cover all corners and small spaces as well. The primer can easily be brushed on using a basic roller or paint brush.
5. Apply the paint.
Once your primer is dry you can apply your paint. Use a durable, high quality roll on paint or spray paint. Apply two coats allowing the paint to dry well in between each application. Take your time in order to avoid drips or uneven coverage.
6. Distress the paint.
If you wish for a more vintage look, you can distress the paint. Do this by taking some sand paper to the corners of the piece where natural wear would normally occur. Simply sand off as much or as little of the paint as you wish to create a worn look.
7. Protect from wear and tear.
Finish the piece by applying a varnish or choice or even a wax coating. This can help distress the look of the piece further while also offering protection to the piece from future wear and tear. A brush or roll on tool is perfect for this application as well.
