How to Save Money on Pumpkins
It seems as though the price of pumpkins goes up each year. If you have a family of four or more people, buying a pumpkin for each person to carve plus decorate with can be pricey. Well don’t feel like you need to give up buying pumpkins even if your budget is tight. Instead, take a peek below at how to save money on pumpkins. You may be surprised at how easy it is.

How to Save Money on Pumpkins

1. Find a local farmer’s stand.
A farmer doesn’t have the overhead a retail store does. Look for a local farmer’s stand that is offering pumpkins. You can typically find a great assortment that you know if fresh, plus they ask less than most retail stores. You may even find other fall items such as corn, mums, and gourds!

2. Weigh your pumpkin.
If your store is selling pumpkins for $4 each, be sure to weight them so you get the most pumpkin for your dollar. You may notice quite a difference in sizes and it makes no sense buying a small one for $4 when you can get a bigger one for the same price.

3. Buy in bulk.
Some farms will offer you a discount if you buy in bulk. Ask about any bulk specials that might be available and take advantage of them. Shop with other families as well if this makes a difference in the price.

4. Watch out for freebies.
Watch out for community events and festivals where pumpkins are being given away to children or sold inexpensively. Not only will you be able to participate and have a great time, but you could walk away with a cheap or free pumpkin!

5. Watch for coupons.
While you won’t find coupons specifically for pumpkins, you may find ones that give you money off a pumpkin if you buy another item. For example, if you buy a certain brand of candy you may get $1 off your pumpkin purchase. Keep your eyes peeled for these coupons so you can use them and save. Use the Favado app to find the best sales on pumpkins at your local grocery stores.

6. Find a U-Pick farm.
A U-Pick farm may offer better prices than a local grocery store. Look for these farms in your area. You often get a free hayride to the field and a few other perks as well, making it a fun and frugal experience for all.

7. Opt for gourd pumpkins.
Mini pumpkins/gourds can be just as fun and usually cost about .50 each. This is a great way to bring the look of pumpkins into your space without buying the big boys.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
