Food waste can be a huge waste of money and resources in our homes. Here are 7 Ways To Reduce Food Waste At Home that will stretch your grocery budget.

While we would like to say this is never a problem, food waste can be a huge waste of money and resources in our homes. When you are working toward a green lifestyle, you must consider even things like what you do with your food waste. Here are 7 Ways To Reduce Food Waste At Home. Not only will this stretch your food budget, but will keep you from being wasteful in another area of your home.

7 Ways To Reduce Food Waste At Home

Stick to your menu plan. One of the biggest ways we end up wasting food is by going off of our set menu plans. When you make something off plan, you often end up losing produce or meat because it goes bad, or you may end up with items that nobody likes that are thrown away. Sticking to your menu plan will help you have just the right amount of food for your family that you know they will love.

Use leftovers in stews and soups. Those few veggies or chunks of meat can be tossed into the freezer to later be used in things like stocks, stews and soups. When you have just a few bites left of something, simply set it aside to combine with some yummy vegetable or chicken broth to create a tasty soup.

Learn what your family actually likes to eat. Trying new recipes is always fun, but you may want to start with small batches until you know it is something your family will love. That new pasta casserole that sounds great to you, may actually be a dud and go to waste. Instead of making the double batch to freeze for later, start with a smaller amount so you can test it out before investing in a large quantity.

Use or store fresh produce in a timely fashion. One of the biggest areas of food waste in your home is in the fresh produce area. While you want to give your family plenty of fruits and vegetables to choose from, you may want to limit the amount you buy to only what can easily be used each week, or at least store properly in the refrigerator or freezer when found in bulk at great prices. Make sure what you are buying will be used before it goes bad.

Learning how to reduce food waste in your home comes with paying attention to what your family is actually eating. Watch and take note of what is being used in your home and purchase or cook accordingly.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
