sisal coaster final2

These simple and pretty DIY Sisal Rope coasters add a natural touch to your home decor.  I am always one for doing it myself, especially if I already have the supplies on hand leftover from other projects.   Beyond the sense of pride you get when you create household projects with your own hands you can also customize to fit exactly right with your style, and save money to boot!  It took me about 20 minutes to make 4 coasters and if I had to purchase the supplies it would have set me back only about $7- that is with plenty of material left over for other projects.

Supplies Needed:

  • 4″  round cork coasters
  • sisal rope
  • hot glue gun/glue

Directions:

Secure end of rope to center of coaster by pressing it down into a generous amount of hot glue, allow it to dry and set completely before moving on or it will slide around while curling the remain rope.  Squeeze a bead of hot glue on cork, going 2″-3″ at a time around the center, press rope into glue and hold for 10 seconds. sisal rope- process

Continue adding hot glue and pressing rope in a little at a time until you reach the outside of cork base. Cut rope, add a generous amount of hot glue to end and press into coaster, I use a craft stick or something to press and hold hot glue so that my fingers are a safe distance away.

How to make Sisal Rope Coasters

Trim stray sisal fibers as well as hot glue strings from your coaster to tidy it up.

My cork tiles came in a set of 6, so you can make 4 or more for your home. This also makes a great housewarming gift, or handmade Christmas gift.  Try using a paint pen to add a touch of color to your homemade coasters, or soak your sisal in colored water to give it a subtle tint, dry it out completely before glueing.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
