These frugal Christmas decorating ideas will allow you to decorate your home for the holidays without blowing your budget.

low-cost Christmas decorating ideas

Christmas is just around the corner and if you are like me, having your home decorated for the holidays is part of the fun. However, this has been a tough economic year for many of us. Our budgets have been stretched and there isn’t much room in it for decorative items. However, there are some low-cost ways to make our home look festive for the holiday season.

Frugal Christmas Decorating Ideas

Here are some easy ways to decorate your home on a budget this Christmas!

Search Your Home for Items to Repurpose

Look through your homes for red, gold, green, silver, and white items that could be repurposed as holiday decor. I found an old green glass bowl and filled it with pine cones to set on my coffee table. Then I remembered some old red wine glasses that my stepmom gave me. I placed the wine glasses on the center of my dining room table with an electric tea light candle inside each one of them.

Use Your Christmas Cards

Prominently display your Christmas cards to add a festive touch to your home. You can use twine to create a swag of cards to add to a mantle or wall. Or tape them to the wall in a fun pattern such as a wreath or Christmas tree.

Bring in Greenery from Your Yard

Nothing says Christmas like greenery. If you have pine trees and other evergreen bushes growing in your yard, there is no reason to buy greens. Look around your yard for greenery, pine boughs, juniper bushes, holly, and pine cones that you can use to decorate your home. Place greens on the mantle, and use them to create a centerpiece or make a Christmas wreath. Don’t forget to look up in the trees for mistletoe.

Check Out the Dollar Store

Your local dollar store will probably have some nice small decorative items like candles, garlands, faux berries, and stockings. Buy a couple of things from the dollar store to place around your home. Group red or white candles of different heights in mix-matched candle holders to create a lovely centerpiece. A few well-placed decorations will create a festive look!

Visit Your Local Thrift Shop

Many thrift stores put seasonal décor out during the holidays. You can find really nice decorations for only a few dollars. Keep an open mind and be willing to improvise with your thrift shop treasures, because you never know what you may find. You can pick up a small vase and a candle stick and then glue them together to make a Hurricane Candle Holder. Don’t forget to look in the linen section for table décor.

Create Your Own Decorations

There are many tutorials for creating your own Christmas decorations. You can make handmade Nativity scenes, create your own  Christmas tree ornaments, and make homemade Christmas decorations.

Adorn Your Home With Kid’s Crafts

Two left thumbs? If you really do not like making your own crafts, then let your kids do the decorating!  Use your kids’ Christmas crafts that they bring home from school as part of your Christmas décor. Your friends and family will love it and your kids will take pride in seeing their art prominently displayed.

What are some ways that you like to decorate for Christmas on a budget?

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
