Frugal Household Cleaning Hacks - Here is a list of helpful household cleaning hacks using salt, lemons, borax, and witch hazel.

Purchasing cleaning products at your local store can really add up over time. Whenever I can, I always try and save money on cleaning supplies. I’ve learned that it doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg in order to have a clean home.

Frugal Household Cleaning Hacks

Cleaning Hacks Using Salt

Salt has many uses for helping you get some frugal cleaning completed around your home. Try these frugal cleaning tips using salt.

  • Salt works as an awesome carpet stain remover. Pair club soda and salt together for the ultimate carpet stain remover. Add club soda to the stain first and then use the salt to dry out the stain and the club soda. The salt is easily vacuumed when everything is dry. You can also use salt as a general spill-soaker-upper.
  • Do you have tarnished copper items lying around your home? Salt and water can be mixed together to make the ultimate metal shiner.
  • Try these other frugal uses for salt.

Cleaning Hacks Using Lemons

Who would have thought that lemons are such an amazing cleaning tool? Not only do lemons do an awesome job of helping with specific cleaning needs, they are also a really cheap tool.

  • Lemons are known to help make metal shine. Adding lemon juice to baking soda will give you a very shiny sink.
  • If you’re dealing with a stained cutting board, cut up a lemon and use it as a scrubber on the board. The lemon helps to extract stains. All you need to do is wash with warm and soapy water afterwards, and you are good to go. You can also use plain lemon juice to clean any stainless steel within your home.
  • Lemon can be your next laundry savior. Add a few teaspoons of lemon juice to the wash cycle and your clothes will come out freshly cleaned with a slightly lemony smell.
  • Try these other frugal household uses for lemons.

Cleaning Hacks Using Borax

Some people are scared to use borax around their home, but it’s actually an amazing frugal cleaning tool. Check out some of these frugal cleaning tips using borax.

  • Borax is an ideal drain cleaner. It helps eliminate pests from within the drain (fruit flies love to live in drains). Borax also does a great job of sanitizing your garbage disposal. You can finally rid your home of an awful decaying sink smell.
  • You can also use Borax to clean a multitude of places in your home. Some of my favorite places to use borax to help me clean are the bathroom and garbage can. Borax makes an awesome toilet cleaner (just add a small amount and scrub until your heart is content). You can also mix part water and part borax together to have the ultimate garbage can cleaner.
  • Borax does an amazing job as a carpet stain remover and deodorizer. Just mix part borax and part water to spray or directly apply the borax/water mixture to the stain.
  • Those of you who struggle with water spots on your dishes, will love borax for this reason. Put a tablespoon of borax in your dishwasher to help remove water spots. No more embarrassing water spots on the dishes for when guests come over.
  • Here are 20 other frugal uses for borax.

Cleaning Hacks Using Witch Hazel

I love witch hazel because I use it for so many beauty hacks, but it’s perfect for frugal cleaning tips as well. Check out some of these ways in which you can use witch hazel around your home.

  • Mix baking soda with witch hazel to get the ultimate bathroom cleaner. There are no harmful chemicals, and it will get your bathroom super clean.
  • You can use witch hazel to clean your flooring. Mix a small amount of witch hazel into a warm bucket of water and have fun cleaning those floors.
  • Don’t forget you can also use witch hazel to clean almost any glass within your home. Try using witch hazel to clean your car windows as well.
  • Here are some more uses for witch hazel to try!

These four ingredients can help you do so much around your home. The remarkable thing about these ingredients is you probably already have most of them in the cabinets around your home.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
