Learn how to make homemade Lavender Rosemary Shampoo with this easy recipe and tutorial.
This wonderfully scented homemade Lavender Rosemary shampoo with essential oils is a great way to skip all the added ingredients that you may want to avoid in commercially made beauty products. This recipe is made up of 4 simple ingredients, each chosen for the natural benefit they bring to your hair and scalp. Rosemary leaves your hair soft and shiny, and is also great for dry scalp and dandruff. Lavender is wonderful for dry scalp and stimulates hair growth. Castile soap, when diluted properly, is a great ingredient for cleaning your hair. While it is a much lower sudsing ingredient than you are used to, believe it or not, that is a good thing, because sulfates strip your hair of natural oils and dry out your follicles. In addition, washing your hair everyday strips it of its natural oils, unless we get dirty or sweaty we only wash our hair about 3 times a week and just rinse the other days.
Homemade Lavender Rosemary Shampoo
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup Lavender Castile Soap
- 1 1/2 cups distilled water
- 3 tsp. virgin coconut oil
- 1 – 3 drops Lavender essential oil
- 1 – 3 drops Rosemary essential oil
Directions:
Melt coconut oil in a microwave safe dish. It should only take about 20-30 seconds to become fully liquefied.
Combine water, coconut oil , castile soap, and essential oils in a pint mason jar and shake vigorously to combine.
Pour into a plastic container to store and use. An empty shampoo bottle is a great container or you can pick up a new pump or squeeze bottle from the craft store.
How to use homemade shampoo:
Squirt a quarter sized amount of shampoo into the palm of your hand
Rub hands together to create lather.
Massage shampoo through hair, beginning at the roots.
Rinse hair well with water as cold as you can tolerate; the cold water will seal your ends and provide a greater shine.

Thanks! Is this runny, or thick like a commercial shampoo?
Eli says
This has left my hair incredibly greasy. Is this one of those recipes that your hair needs an adjusting period? I really want to use a natural shampoo, but can’t handle it if it leaves my hair greasy. Any advice?
Katie says
I have had the same experience – I am not sure what to do. Have you found the answer to this yet, Eli?
Melody says
If you have hard water in your area, try using distilled water in the recipe instead of tap water. I have not tried that in this recipe yet, but it helped in a similar one.
Fran says
I cut the coconut oil down to 1 tsp. I have thin fine hair and the 3 tsp just weighed my hair down.

Can you freeze this shampoo in ice trays? I already make my own shampoo but I really like the rosemary in this one. Oh, I love your website.

How do you make yours?

I made this yesterday, and used about 10 drops of each essential oil. I am thinking I used too much oil. Next batch, I will reduce essential oil to 1 each. If I still think there’s too much oil after reducing essential oils, I will reduce coconut oil. I believe this is going to be a winner once I find the right balance for my hair. Thank you for the recipe.

I made it today and my hair was very greasy in the shower. Once I got out of the dryer and used the hair dryer on it. My hair had lots of body!!! Like 80’s hair which is not the look I was going for. Some advice please!

Does this rinse out well from hair in semi hard water? I’ve had bad experience with castile soap not rinsing out and leaving my hair heavy and greasy/dry at the same time, being an oil based soap.. 🙁
DaNita says
As a substitute to castile soap you can use the shavings of any bar of soap. I looked it up on the castile site.
Sarah says
Castile is just a liquid version of bar soap so this wouldn’t solve the issue. The issue is you’d need to soften the water used to rinse your hair. As Myriam said, do an apple cider vinegar rinse after washing to soften your water to help get the soap out of your hair. Try to use a large enough quantity of water to actually fully rinse your hair, because if you don’t get all the soap out before rinsing in your tap water, it will stay gross. An alternative to this would be to filter some water using a Brita or similar filter, to get a large portion of the minerals out of your water, and rinse with this instead. Hope this helps everyone!
Myriam says
You should rince your hair with half a liter water to which you add some apple cider vinegar. Works like a charm for me!

I tried this shampoo too, but I don’t know why my hair looks opaque without shiny at all… can somebody please help me cause I already bought all of the ingredients… thanks..!
Karen W. says
I know it’s convenient to use a plastic bottle but since essential oils break down the plastic I would use a glass bottle if you could.
Kay Morton says
Use a PET plastic bottle, or glass if you prefer.

You can try 1 tablespoon in 1 cup of warm water with 1 drop essential oil as a shampoo. One drop of essential oil is all you need. Does not leave hair feeling oily.

Is it okay to use only one essential oil? I know it won’t necessarily give it a nice balanced scent, but I only have one essential oil (tea tree oil) in my home at the moment and would love to try it out!
Alea Milham says
Yes, you can use just one of the essential oils if you wish.

Do you need to use a conditioner after this or just use the shampoo? Have been looking for an easy natural DIY shampoo, can’t wait to make this!

I used this shampoo today for my 7 yr. old nephew in which he had burns and scrapes. We also used it bubble bath as he called it. Smells great and I know that it helped his deeper scrapes to heal. He said, that he felt great after using it. My soap was castile peppermint, it was what I had on hand. Worked very well with rosemary and lavender It did not burn even the cut/burned area on his knee.
Jo Reid says
I was also wondering if you use a conditioner after. Also would this help if my 10 year old has a smelly scalp? We can wash her hair but she never gets the clean, nice smelling hair my other kids get after they shampoo.
Mary says
Hi Jo
We haven’t tried the shampoo yet, but for “stinky” scalp, we have found that 1/2-1C of white vinegar, massaged into scalp prior to shampooing works to remove the oily scalp smell.
SF says

You can opt for an Apple cider vinegar rinse instead of conditioner. That’s what I’ve been using for a couple of weeks. It leaves me hair shiney and soft. Depending on the length of your hair….. mine is very long just about to the top of my waist line. Here is my conversion:
16 oz of cool water,
2 tablespoons of ACV braggs or comparable organic brand
4/5 drops of young living cedar wood oil
4/5 drops of young living bergamot oil
4/5 drops of young living lavender oil
Shake very well before application…. wash hair rinse! Pour mixture over entire scalp and let run through length of hair ….apply a small amount of your own natural organic conditioner to only the very ends and let sit while you bathe… your then rinse and let dry natural if possible…. I love it.
I don’t use it more than 2X a week. But it varies with each individual… do some research and see for your self. It works great for me and my son. You can even change up the essentials oils to suit your individual taste…. no one body chemistry is the same. Enjoy❤️
