These DIY Moth Repellent Bags are a natural alternative to stinky mothballs. Follow the easy tutorial to repel moths and protect your stored clothing.

Moths, particularly clothing moths, can be a nuisance and even destructive. However, there are certain scents that moths hate and we can use those scents to help repel them. You can use these substances in either their dried form, as essential oils, or a combination of both.

What Smells Do Moths Hate?

  • Lavender
  • Cedar
  • Rosemary
  • Bay Leaves
  • Peppermint
  • Thyme
  • Eucalyptus
  • Cloves

How to Naturally Repel Moths:

To use essential oils to repel moths naturally, place a few drops of the oil on a cloth or cotton ball. Then place the cotton balls in areas where moths might be an issue.

To use dried herbs to deter moths, add them to a small sachets or muslin drawstring bag. Then hang the sachets in closets and other areas where moths may be a concern.

You can also use a combination of essential oils and dried herbs to make your sachets by adding cotton balls with essential oil to the bag.

These moth-repellent sachets are made with natural ingredients and pack a powerful repelling punch to protect your clothes and other fabrics from holes without the stinging smell of traditional mothballs. Gather the supplies and put these together before you pack away your winter clothes.

Remember, while these sachets can repel moths, they work best when combined with good housekeeping practices such as regular cleaning and vacuuming to remove moth eggs and larvae.

These bags are very inexpensive to make. You can reuse the bag and refresh the ingredients each year as you are putting away your winter clothes.

Over time, the potency of these natural moth repellents diminishes, so they should be replaced periodically. I like to replace my sachets when I pack away clothes and linens with the changing seasons.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
