How to Create a Faux Metallic Finish Basket using an inexpensive plastic basket and metallic spray paint. This is a quick and easy DIY project.

Your local Dollar Tree has a huge selection of plastic baskets and totes, perfect for storing craft supplies, toiletries, and toys.  But what if you want something with a little more style? Stores such as Restoration Hardware and Pier One Imports offer industrial style metal baskets, however as you know this style comes at a cost! Instead, why not use Dollar Tree supplies to make your industrial inspired baskets? Take a look below at how you can craft your own upcycled dollar store basket, perfect for bringing the industrial look to you for less!

How to Create a Faux Metallic Finish Basket

Supplies needed:

  • Plastic locker style basket ($1 at Dollar Tree)
  • Oil Rubbed Bronze Metallic Spray Paint
  • Burlap ribbon of choice (Dollar Tree sells several varieties as do most craft stores)
  • Scissors

Directions:

1. Begin by placing the plastic basket on some scrap paper for painting. Apply two coats, allowing the coats to dry in between. Make sure you spray the inside as well as the outside of the basket. You will notice how instantly the basket has a metal, vintage look! Allow the paint coats to thoroughly dry before moving onto step 2.

2. Next, prepare the run the ribbon through the basket. If the ribbon is wide just fold it in half and start weaving it in and out of the basket. You want it to go all of the way around the basket creating a decorative strip. If you want, you can make several of these strips. We however decided for our own tastes that one was enough.

Once the ribbon is ran through, your industrial style upcycled dollar store basket is ready to be enjoyed. Display cook books or magazines in it, or place some flower pots, kitchen tools, or anything else you can think of. You will find that it is full of style and looks like baskets that cost 10 times as much.

Gather your supplies and create one of these upcycled dollar store baskets for yourself! It is a great way to add some industrial inspired decor to your space for less.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
