You are probably on the eco-friendly path and make sure to recycle, reuse, and repurpose whenever you can. Your beauty routine can be made more green as well and in this post I will tell you some amazing tips to make that happen!
Makeup:
When you can afford to, buy natural or green makeup products. This means reading labels and making sure the that products are safe and natural.
For makeup brushes, look for bamboo handled makeup brushes with taklon bristles.
Read labels, not claims on the box. The general rule? If you can’t read the ingredient, you don’t need it on your face.
Hair:
Henna is a great option for hair tinting. It is made from natural ingredients and will not dry your hair out the way chemical hair dye will and since it is natural, it is obviously better for the environment.
While it may seem simple, use less heat when styling your hair. Go for old fashioned rollers that set overnight and let your hair air-dry. This is good for your tresses as it cuts down on heat damage and good for the Earth as it conserves electricity.
Moisturize your hair with natural products instead of manufactured ones. Organic coconut oil works great as a deep treatment for dry or damaged hair. Just put on your dry hair, allow to sit for several hours (or overnight with a shower cap on to prevent ruining your pillow) and wash out with warm water. Here are more homemade hair treatments that you can make.
Skin & Body:
Skip synthetic perfumes. These go through a rigorous manufacturing process. Instead, try making some of your own herbal infused waters with 10-12 drops of your favorite essential oils in a cup and half of water. Splash on or put in a small spray bottle.
Moisturize that dry skin with organic shea butter. It works better than any lotion or cream you have ever used. A little goes a long way, too, so it is a good frugal buy. You can also make your own body lotions.
Overall beauty tips for living more green:
Use less. Did you know you only need a dime sized amount of liquid foundation? Toothpaste can be just a tiny pea size to get the pearly whites you are looking for. Look for proper amounts to use and since you are using less, that is less you will have to buy and less consumed.
Don’t use disposable cleaning products like facial wipes. Instead, get a good soft cloth that you use for cleansing your face.
Make your own facial cleansers and masks from natural ingredients. They cost less and you know exactly what is going in them.
Concentrate on eating healthy and as natural as possible. Our skin is a direct reflection of what is going on in our bodies. If you eat better, you will see an improvement in the health of your skin, nails, and hair over time.
Clean your body with bar soap rather than liquid. While you may enjoy the liquid better, it is far more eco-friendly to use bar soap for your face and body because it lasts longer, has fewer chemicals and has very little packaging. If you like liquid-soap, make your own homemade liquid body wash.
Look at packaging that you buy your products in. Can it be recycled? Is it overkill? Let this detail be your guide to buying so you don’t buy into consumer package nightmares.
Speaking of packaging, just like you divide your kitchen packages for recycling, do the same for the bottles of beauty products you have.
For shaving, give up your aerosol shaving foam. While aerosol is not as dangerous to the ozone as it once was, they have been replaced by petroleum products. Instead, use coconut oil as a good shaving barrier. It will also moisturize your skin as it works to keep you nick free.
If you love to lather in the shower, get a natural loofah or just a plain old wash cloth. Those plastic poofs we all love contain synthetic fibers that are harmful and take forever and a day to break down in landfills.
