How to Redo Your Dining Room on a Budget
You know the saying, “new year, new me?” And each year everyone talks about the changes they are going to make and how they are going to be different. I don’t like making resolutions, because I will never keep them. NEVER.
However, I do like to have a new look around my home. Each January and February you will find me tearing up my house. I move furniture around, paint, and redesign rooms. I hate the same ole’ same look.
This year I decided to give my dining room a new look. I wanted something that was still modern, but also had the stamp of approval for classy. Lately, I’ve been digging the color gold. However, my dollars will only go so far when it comes to the constant change of home improvements.
So since I love finding table decor items for cheap, I was up to the challenge.
My dining room walls are painted a mustard yellow. I decided not to repaint the walls since this color would work well with my gold and white theme. As always, I start shopping in my own home. You would be surprised of the many items that you can find right in your own “backyard”.
My inspiration for putting together this design actually started with these plates.
I found these plates at Pier 1 Import as part of their 50-70% off Christmas clearance rack. Scoring these plates for about $2.50 each was like digging through a “gold mine”.
Underneath the plate is actually a placemat I picked up from Target for .98 cents almost two years ago. I didn’t have anything to go with them, so I just stored them in my closet.
I decided to take these placemats and turn them into decorative napkins.
I just folded the napkin into a triangle.
I also found these gold decorative plate charges at Pier 1 for 60% off (about $3 each).
After scoring these beautiful plates, putting together the rest of the room was a piece of cake.
I found some odds and ends of gold decorations from my storage closet, Pier 1 and Target.
Frugal savings tip: If you plan to redecorate a room and you have a certain color or theme, try to shop ahead of time by shopping the clearance racks. For example, since I wanted gold decor I waited to shop after Christmas. At Pier I Imports, I actually stalked their stores until they went to the 50-60% clearance mark-off.
The sign Joy was obviously a Christmas decoration that I was able to nab for about $2 bucks.
The gold rocks were on clearance for $3.00
I found the gold coffee cups at Home Goods. Unfortunately I could only find three. I love shopping at Home Goods, but sometimes you get what you get. They have beautiful pieces, but it can be hard to find full sets of the same items. {Each cup on clearance for $3}
The White and Black pitcher has a hint of gold on the bottom. When I saw it on clearance at Home Goods, I just had to have it. I mean, for $7 bucks… why not?
When I had this design in my head, I wanted white flowers. But not just any white flowers, but white flowers that flowed freely from a vase. I was able to pick some up at Hobby Lobby for 50% off, a total of $15 bucks spent.
I have a secret to share with y’all.
That beautiful gold and white linen table runner is not a runner. It’s actually two rugs put together to make a long and wide table runner. I spotted the rugs at Hobby Lobby (on sale for 50% off course) while searching for random gold decorations. I initially thought they were table runners, but when I read the tag, it clearly said rug.
However, being creative and loving to come up with different ideas for table runners, I decided to purchase two! And I absolutely LOVE how they came out! A total of $34.00 spent!
The clear vases with the gold trim were found at Home Goods for just $7 bucks a piece! I decided to keep the centerpieces for this table simple, since I wanted the table runner to be a highlight, as well as the plates. So just two vases and white flowers that I pulled from my decor closet.
The curtains are also a new addition to this room. It’s amazing how much a room can change when you add a new pair of curtains. I picked these up at Target for $40.00 for the pair.
I also pulled out my own glassware, white bowls, silverware and candles to complete this look.
Now, let’s add up the total cost of this dining room redesign.
Total spent $160.88
Considering that I received a lot of these items at 50-80%, I am pleased with the outcome of the room and how much I saved during this process.
In the past, my redesigns have cost me anywhere between $300-$600. It’s refreshing to see that over time, I have learned to use what I already have on hand to make to something old into something new.
Now, it’s your turn! If you’re looking to redo a room, especially the dining room, use these tips to redesign your own space. Look around your home to see what you already have on hand that can be used to give your dining room a new look. Shop the clearance aisles, thrift shops, and even barter with your friends and trade decor items!
Overall, have fun with it. Keep in mind that you do not have to spend a ton of money to get a fabulous design!
Until next time,
