One simple way to eat better is by swapping out certain foods for healthier options. These tips will show you Easy Ways to Make Healthy Food Substitutions.

When getting rid of food in our home that is a temptation to us, there may be some anxiety because you might not know what you will replace it with. The good news is, there are lots of ways to make healthy food substitutions that will take the place of your old favorites quite nicely! These tips and resources will show you some Easy Ways to Make Healthy Food Substitutions.

Easy Ways to Make Healthy Food Substitutions

Make some substitutions with everyday food. Items like mayonnaise and vegetable oil can be substituted for avocado and coconut oil, for instance. In most situations, you won’t even notice the change. This list from Greatist gives you 67 healthy food swaps that you can make with everyday foods.

Make it easier to swap out for something healthier. If you make the act of swapping out simple, you are more likely to do it. store your swaps where the items they’re replacing used to be. For instance, you can place coconut oil in your cupboard where the vegetable oil used to be. Do a bit of prep at the beginning of each week to make it easier to do if you need to.

Don’t be afraid to try new foods. One of my favorite things to do when I go to the grocery store is to visit what I  like to call the “weird fruit section” of the produce area. I try to see what is there that I haven’t tried yet as a culinary adventure. If you want to do this, I suggest buying a small amount and giving it a shot. It’s a great way to open up your pallet. Check out this Woman’s Day list of 10 exotic fruits to try and keep your eyes peeled for them the next time you go to the store.

Listen to your body. Your body is usually craving something for a reason and it’s not the reason you may think. Often times, some of our favorite junk foods have certain vitamins or minerals in them and to get us to consume them, our brain will trigger satisfying foods that contain them as a craving. Start to retrain your body by making a healthy swap with this list from Nature Works Best on food cravings and what they mean.

For junk food cravings, try something healthier that will still satisfy you.  Often, we reach for what is easiest and not what is healthier. There are many healthy alternatives to junk food cravings, or rather ‘healthier junkfood’. If you want to know what to substitute for chips, french fries, and cookies, check out this list of healthy snack alternatives from Eat This, Not That.

Don’t try to do it all at once. One of the things I have learned from making lifestyle changes and failing is that one of the easiest ways to fail is to try to do it all at once. Making healthy eating a lifestyle change takes time and one of the best ways to do it is to slowly make these changes with simple substitutions at first and harder ones later.

Consider making switches when baking as well. Baking is one place that many people don’t realize can be done in a healthier manner. Here is a great infographic on healthy baking alternatives from Greatist.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
