Minimizing Paper Usage in the Kitchen

Last year I decided to go paperless in our kitchen and stopped buying paper towels and paper napkins. I pulled out the cloth napkins and put them on the counter. And most importantly, I introduced my family to kitchen towels.

I purchased most of my napkins at after-holiday clearance sales. Some I made myself by cutting up an old table cloth and hemming the edges. They are brightly colored with fall and Christmas colors, so I have not had a problem with stains. I am not going to swear that they don’t have stains, but if they have stains I haven’t noticed them.

I don’t want the dirty napkins and damp towels molding the other dirty laundry, so I put a separate bucket in the laundry room for them to sit in until they can be washed. If they smell a little mildewy, I add 1/2 cup vinegar to the wash. It always takes care of the odor.

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
